Welcome to 6th grade Language Arts! We have an exciting year planned. We will begin by reading a variety of short stories and focusing on different literary aspects, such as short story elements, theme, and conflict. In addition, students will be working on weekly Greek and Latin Roots. Each week students will receive 10 words and definitions and show their understanding through their completed work. Feel free to contact me at any time if there are any concerns or questions via phone or email. I’m looking forward to a great year!

In November, we will finish our novel, Life As We Knew It. Students will work in the library completing end of novel activities, showing their knowledge of characters, plot, and theme. After Thanksgiving Break, students will dive into another novel, Homeless Bird, by Gloria Whelan. We will begin by researching Indian culture. This is a novel about trust, strength, and tradition. The book follows the main character, Koly, as she navigates life and growing up.

Students will continue to focus on our novel, Homeless Bird. We will finish our novel before winter break and complete a quilt square in the makerspace of our library. In the novel, Koly tells her story through her talent of embroidery. Students will choose one of the many symbols from the book to create a quilt square. These squares will be sewn together, along with the squares from all of 6th grade to create a beautiful quilt. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's creativity. Weekly Greek and Latin Roots continue each Wednesday. Have a safe and healthy winter break!

Welcome back! I hope everyone had an enjoyable and relaxing break. This month, we will begin our research project of the Greek Gods and Goddesses. Students will spend time in the library, researching their god's family, appearance, stories, and much more. We will learn how to cite sources and paraphrase as well. For the culminating project, students will create a presentation and Kahoot, to test their peers' knowledge of what they were taught. Weekly Greek and Latin Roots continue each Wednesday.

Students will be busy this month presenting their Greek God research to their classmates. After their presentation, they will test their knowledge with a Kahoot. I am looking forward to seeing everyone's creativity. In addition, we will begin another novel, As Brave As You, by Jason Reynolds. This tells a story of two brothers who spend the summer with their grandparents. It is a story we can relate to, as it focuses on bravery, family relationships, and honesty. During the novel, we will focus on figurative language, vocabulary, and characterization. Weekly roots work continues every Wednesday.
